anabatic wind

Any wind blowing up an incline. The winds develop in valley inlets when the hillsides become warmer than the valley bottoms and inlet waters. These upslope winds generally signal the onset of a sea breeze into the inlet. See WXT G447. See also local winds.

Gently sloping valley sides, especially ones facing south (in the NH), have stronger anabatic flow than those with steep sides. The opposite, downslope wind is called a katabatic wind.
