cyclone

1. An approximately circular portion of the atmosphere having relatively low atmospheric pressure and winds which blow counterclockwise and inward around the center in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise and inward in the Southern Hemisphere. In this course we refer to cyclones more generally as "Lows." See Low for more information. See also tropical cyclone.

2. The name of a tropical storm in the South Indian Ocean when the winds are greater than 34 knots.
