Greenwich Mean Time

The standard time system used in Greenwich England and throughout the world for navigational computations. It is another name for universal coordinated time (UTC), which is broadcast continuously on shortwave stations WWV and WWVH, among others. To do celestial navigation we must know what time it is (accurate to the second) according to GMT, at all times of day and night. See WWV.

In the Starpath celestial nav course we use the abbreviation GMT, as opposed to UT, for most of the discussion and data. Please see Universal Time for notes on why we do this.
