Doppler effect

A shift in frequency of a wave due to the relative movement of the source or the observer. This principle plays a key role in modern marine instrumentation in several areas, including Transit Sat-Nav for position finding, in GPS and sonar for speed determinations, and in NEXRAD weather radar to measure wind speeds.
