foehn

A warm, dry, wind blowing down the leeward slope of a mountain and across a valley floor or pain. In contrast, a cold wind blowing down a mountain slope is called a fall wind. Also in contrast, a fall wind can occur from the relaxation of updrafts, or simply cold heavy air falling down the hill. A foehn must be driven down the hill by a local weather pattern.

The Santa Ana is a famous foehn than can affect mariners. The Chinook is an inland example.

See G243 for a list of maritime local winds.
