gap wind

Winds that accelerate due to restriction between hills, cliffs, or mountains, as illustrated in G124. Also seen in passes or channels between islands. See G147 for examples from Hawaii.

Winds in the Columbia River Gorge are a dramatic example -- on the border between Washington state and Oregon, where board sailors can routinely find 30 to 40 knots of wind while winds elsewhere on the river are only moderate.

Sometimes called channeled winds, funneled winds, or mountain-gap winds.

See G123 for sea breeze gap winds in San Francisco Bay and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
