header

When sailing, a wind shift toward the bow. In contrast, a wind shift away from the bow is called a lift. Note that a header on one tack is a lift on the opposite tack. See G260. See also haul.

When sailing to weather, a header impedes progress while a lift enhances it. The opposite is generally true when sailing downwind. Note that a veer is a lift on a starboard tack, but a header on a port tack. Tacks are illustrated in G262.

A header is sometimes called a "knock" by sailors.
