| High Short for area of high pressure. Since a High is, on a synoptic chart, always associated with anticyclonic circulation, the term is used interchangeably with anticyclone. In this course, we capitalize High to emphasize this use of the term as an entity rather than just a description of relative pressures and to emphasize the key role in plays in the subject matter. See atmospheric pressure for more general description and record values. See also blocking High and Atlantic High and Pacific High. Properties of Highs and Lows are compared in G153. G180 shows the circulation of wind around Highs and Lows. G139 illustrates the wind and pressure changes as a high pressure ridge passes over a location. Figure G255 shows wind flowing out of Highs and into Lows. Wind flow around Highs and Lows is discussed in ART-2 on wind. |
