hydrosphere

The water portion of the earth as distinguished from the solid part, called the lithosphere, and from the gaseous outer envelope, called the atmosphere. The hydrosphere covers 71% of the earth's surface (land, the lithosphere, covers 29%). Considering sea level as a reference shell to the earth, the volume of land above sea level is only some 8% of the volume of water below sea level.
