knock

Sailor's jargon for a header (another jargon), which means a wind shift toward the bow. See header. The opposite wind shift is called a lift.

Sailing to weather, the phrase "we have just been knocked" means we had a wind shift that causes us to sail even farther off the original windward direction.

Not to be confused with "knocked down" which is a broach.

Headers and lifts are illustrated in G260.
