F/V Aimee O's Wheelhouse
...360 degrees of uninterrupted visibility!
Wheel HouseThe wheelhouse is ideal for navigation training. There is plenty of room for six, with a stand-up full size chart table, large comfortable settee, and 3 "captain's chairs." There is also a unique uninterrupted view around the horizon designed for commercial fishing needs, but ideal for navigation training... and sightseeing.
Wheel HouseWe typically have 4 on watch at a time, with one at the wheel, one at the radar, one at the plotting table, and one observer overlooking all jobs until it is time to rotate in. We maintain both electronic-chart navigation as well as traditional paper chart and compass navigation. The routes we follow are strongly affected by tidal currents (some regions have daily currents larger than 10 kts!), so planning the passages is a key part of the exercise. We typically cruise at 8 kts, but could safely run at 9 or 10 kts if needed.
Wheel HouseSpecial emphasis is placed on radar training underway, with the goal that all students leave the vessel with a full working versatile knowledge of radar for piloting, chart navigation, and collision avoidance. Below decks, the radar practice can continue using our onboard PC radar simulator.
